In 2 acts. Based on the play by A. Ostrovsky.
The action of Ostrovsky’s play takes place in a backwater town in the 19th century, but…
“It is our passions, our worries which rouse and control us. The characters of the play exist in the “lower depths,” where people will strangle each other for a kopeck without so much as a thought. And in those lower depths of society, love takes hold without rhyme or reason where it is least welcome. It is, as it were, a butterfly that flew into a mine… True, a butterfly in a coal mine is also already not entirely a butterfly – it has already “metamorphosed.” Here, everything has metamorphosed – love and money, too – and taken on a hypertrophied, yet ordinary form. The play rests on human feelings which nobody really needs: they change and change, but some continue to believe in them…”
